Exploring the History and Beauty of Showcase Wine Cellars
The tides have been turning for some time, but we can now make it official: the days of descending into musty, tomb-like wine cellars are gone. As time has passed, wine enthusiasts have steadily evolved the concept of what a wine cellar is, transforming it from a space of old-world utility to one of showmanship, community, and sophistication. And at Sommi Wine Cellars, we couldn’t be more thrilled.
A showcase of luxury—this opulent wine cellar pairs rich materials with refined architectural details.
While there’s certainly a classic charm to the wine cellar design of old (stone walls, wood, dimly lit), we believe wine cellars can be so much more. With a custom wine cellar builder at your side, your new space can truly be the centerpiece of your home, embracing your personality while preserving and displaying your curated wine collection.
Custom wine cellars can blend retro and classic design to create a style that’s uniquely yours.
Wine Cellars Through the Ages
Uncovered in the northern Israeli city of Nahariya in 2013, the oldest-known wine cellar dates back 3,700 years and is, unsurprisingly, basically a room in a basement. That extremely utilitarian design persisted for centuries.
The Renaissance, with its renewed appreciation of the arts, introduced a splash of flare to wine cellars. The spaces began to weave in architectural touches such as dramatic vaulted ceilings and housed gorgeous barrels of fine wine. But while these prettier spaces crept closer to social spaces (often located next to dining areas and the like), they remained separate entities focused on the storage of wine, not its appreciation.
Draw inspiration from the timeless charm of Cella Vinaria della Confraternita di Valdobbiadene for your own wine cellar.
Centuries later, and as wine appreciation grew in popularity (especially in the 2000s), collectors began to incorporate their oenophilic passions front and center in their homes. No longer tucked away in the basement free from sunlight and visitors, these new cellars adopted a showpiece aesthetic by focusing on more transparent architecture and incorporating areas that encouraged socialization.
Interestingly, this trend of wine cellars built in social areas of the home spiked during a decidedly non-social time—the COVID-19 pandemic. With scores of homeowners unable to enjoy a glass of their favorite red at their favorite local bistro, wine enthusiasts sought ways to turn their own dwellings into elegant slices of vino heaven.
The ways in which that goal is achieved are truly worthy of the title “showcase.”
The Stunning Elements of Showcase Wine Cellars
Showcase wine cellars are true to their name. They are built to showcase (and, depending on the breadth of the collection, show off) the wine held inside. What once may have been heavy wooden doors are now floor-to-ceiling glass entrances and partitions. These glass features separate the wine cellar from the greater space, allowing for climate and UV control measures while granting visitors full view of the vintages stored on custom racks (built to accommodate various bottle sizes, naturally).
Go all-natural in your showcase cellar to create a timeless look for your at-home wine collection.
But while glass is typically an element of showcase wine cellars, the true beauty of these projects is their ability to show a homeowner’s personality and passion. From elevated rumpus rooms with custom modern gaming tables to lounge spaces featuring elegant seating and a wet bar (or all of the above, as seen in our latest project), these spaces can reflect any taste. Even better, these concepts can be combined with custom LED lighting, a mix of architectural materials to showcase unique style (concrete, reclaimed wood, brass, marble), and bespoke rack design.
What could be a better environment for sipping a newly uncorked bottle?

Interested in creating your own custom showcase wine cellar?
This transition from basement storage to showcase wine cellars falls in line with a larger trend in modern architecture. More homeowners desire to blend function with form, incorporating their personal passions and interests into the hearts of the homes rather than tucking them away for out-of-sight utility.
Small space? Smart lighting can turn it into a stunning showcase wine cellar while protecting your coveted collection.
